How often should you wash your hair?

If you wash your hair once or twice a day or every other day, you are washing your hair too much. Shampoos are very strong anti-bacterial soaps that strip out the oils your hair needs. Good shampoos and conditioners are expensive and if you are using them too frequently, that can be a significant amount of money out of your wallet. Deep conditioning treatments are essential for healthy hair. You may think that regular washes are enough to keep your hair strong. Be Prepared for an Adjustment Period

Training your hair is a process, so be patient. When you start changing your hair cleaning habits and applying deep conditioning treatments regularly, there will be a period where your hair is very greasy. It will take time for your scalp to re-adjust and stop the overproduction of oils. You may be tempted to return to your old washing routine. However, refrain from doing so to begin seeing results.

If you wash your hair every single day, start by washing every other day for a week straight. The next week you should go two days in between washing your hair. There are products you can use to help your hair stay clean during this adjustment period. Investing in a good dry shampoo can extend the time your hair is grease free. Dry shampoos are powdery, thus soaking up the excess oil in your scalp to help you stretch the days between washes. The best way to apply dry shampoo is to spray your roots, flip your hair over to spray your scalp and then take a blow dryer to get rid of the extra product. Another method of applying dry shampoo is to put it in your hair before you go to bed. While you sleep, the powder soaks up the oil.

Become Educated About Your Shampoo and Conditioner

Shampoos and conditioners are not all created equally. While it may be cost efficient to buy a cheap bottle of shampoo and conditioner, it is  often not the best choice for healthier hair. Sulfates are common ingredients in shampoos and conditioners to generate a thick lather in your hair. Unfortunately, they are very stringent and damage hair easily, especially color-treated hair. Sulfate-free shampoos are recommended if you struggle with any sort of skin irritation, such as eczema, or have highly sensitive skin. While sulfate-free products are a bit more expensive and less sudsy, they will better nourish your hair.
